About the Program

The Mandel Program for Medical Leadership in the North prepares women and men from a range of health professions, who represent diverse communities and health care organizations throughout the region. The program seeks to advance the health care system in Israel’s North through shared regional responsibility, a strong sense of mission, entrepreneurial initiative and social responsibility.

The community of senior medical leaders that emerges from the program is intended to serve as a professional and ethical source of inspiration for future generations of health care professionals in the North, while promoting excellence and remaining rooted in values of fairness and tolerance. The program’s work is grounded in deep humanistic knowledge, broad familiarity with Northern society and values-based medical education.

The Mandel Program for Medical Leadership in the North is a joint venture of the Mandel Foundation–Israel and the Ministry of Health.

Areas of Study

The program is structured around four main areas of study:

Foundational Learning Tracks

The program also includes three foundational learning tracks that are explored throughout the year:

• Leadership in a Diverse Society – Theoretical study and practical experience in leadership development grounded in values of fairness, awareness of blind spots, recognition of the pain of others, inclusion of multiple narratives and promotion of new, nonconventional responses to the diverse and sometimes conflicting needs of communities across the North.

• Medical Education, Professional Identity and Leadership – A journey of individual and group study that integrates knowledge and tools from medical education, medical culture and clinical practice, with the aim of cultivating values-based, sensitive leadership that is aware of its impact on professionals, students, colleagues, patients and their families.

• Philosophical Thinking – Joint study of texts from the Western philosophical canon, aimed at deepening understanding of foundational philosophical and ethical concepts, clarifying values, developing critical thinking and sharpening worldviews.

The program also offers fellows an individual mentoring track that helps connect the learning in the program to each participant’s unique professional challenges, in order to promote acts of values-based leadership in the future.

Graduates of the program join the Mandel graduate community, and the Mandel Center for Leadership in the North continues to serve as a home for reflection, consultation and advancement of Northern collaborations.

The Mandel Center for Leadership in the North aims to contribute to the development and prosperity of Israel’s Northern region by cultivating diverse leadership – women and men from all communities in the North – who have the passion and commitment to change reality and to lead initiatives that improve life for all communities of the region.
